I am waiting for my flight to Anchorage with great anticipation. This will be my sixth year in a row, joining the Alaska Steelhead Company to fish on the Kenai.
That should tell you with what high esteem I hold Matt and Rosie Sprecher, the Alaska Steelhead Company and their personnel. It is simply the best guide company that I have ever fished with, and I have fished with a lot of guide companies.
The steelhead fishing is unparalleled. The Sprecher’s take their steelhead insurance policy seriously. The diversity of the rivers makes it very unlikely that the weather will blow out any one river and prevent fishing.
In addition, the Fishing has been consistently good. I would say probably the best anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. Do you want to wade and swing flies, you got it. Do you want to float and bead, you got it. Would you like to fish secluded remote streams, the helicopter will get you there.
And you will catch fish. Many of my friends have given up steelhead fishing after being skunked on successive trips in the lower 48. That just has never happened to me or my friends fishing with ASC.
The guide staff is superb. Most of them have been guiding for ASC for years and have been well vetted and are the cream of their profession. If you are a newbie, they will get you casting and teach you how to play and land fish. If you are a veteran, they will help you refine your skills.
While the fishing experience is paramount, as I have gotten older, I have begun to appreciate the importance of comfort, amenities and accommodations. ASC receives high grades in these areas.
The high point for many guests are the evening meals. Felix’s virtuosity in the kitchen results in a multicourse meal rivaling any Michelin star restaurant. Dinner is also the time to get reacquainted with the friends we have made on past visits to the ASC.
The number of returning guests is also a testament to the quality of the ASC fishing experience and Matt and Rosie’s stewardship.
I really am looking forward to another great season on the Kenai with the ASC.
